Frequently Asked Questions

What is your cost for alterations?

Basic alterations such as hemming trousers or jeans, bringing up the sleeves on a shirt or jacket, or taking in the waist on a jacket or trousers are complementary on items at time of purchase. We are also happy to work on older garments purchased at Joseph’s for a by-procedure cost. Turnaround times vary with workload. We occasionally take outside work during low volume times (i.e. winter), please call ahead to find out if we are able to work on your outside garments.

Where can I park?

There are metered parking spots available near the front entrance and around the Old Port, which are free every Sunday. A parking garage is located across the street from the store at 427 Fore Street.

Are your clothes made in the USA/Maine?

We source clothing from all over the world, and are proud to offer a large amount of items made in the USA and Maine. We have denim by Hiroshi Kato and Citizen of Humanity; shirts by Gitman Bros; socks and accessories by Dapper Classics and more. We also carry companies like Loyal Citizen making goods right here in Maine.

Will you still sell my favorite item next season?

Short answer: Maybe!

Long answer: Joseph’s carries dozens of brands from all over the world. Ranging from casual American brands like Raleigh Denim Workshop and Citizens of Humanity, to premium Italian brands like Barmas, Mason’s, and Paul & Shark; we also carry tailoring from Jack Victor, Canali and many more. As new brands are constantly starting and old brands evolving, so does what we stock. If you have a question about a specific item please email us or call to speak with an associate.

Do I need an appointment for a custom suit fitting?

We accept walk-ins for custom suiting or shirts every day, however it is advantageous to you to make an appointment so we can be sure to have a fitter or tailor available. See our custom clothing section for more information. Please use the contact form to email us, or call the store to speak with an associate if you would like to set up an appointment.

How much does a suit cost?

Our off the rack prices generally range from $645-$1800 depending on brand and the level of hand-work. All suits come with complementary basic alterations by our master tailor to ensure a proper fit. We also have Made-to-Measure and Full Custom programs starting at $1350 for a suit, or $975 for a sport coat, with an upper limit only bounded by your imagination.

How long does it take to get a suit fit?

Typically about a week. Our master tailor alters every suit to make sure it looks perfect, this usually takes 5-7 days, but may be longer during high traffic seasons (i.e. summer).

We have dozens of suits available off-the-rack, and if you only need the pants hemmed, you can walk out in your new suit today. More substantial alterations may take up to 7-10 days.

If we do not have your size in stock, ordering stock garments takes about a week, plus another week for alterations.

What are your options for custom suiting?

We have numerous options for custom clothing ranging from bow ties to shirts to full suits. Please see our custom clothing area for all relevant info on custom clothing.

I live out of town, but wanted something altered, what are my options?

We are happy to ship any items you purchase at Joseph’s for a modest shipping fee. If you live out of state, we can also refund Maine State sales tax, so your total purchase price is roughly the same.

What is your return policy?

Joseph’s will be happy to provide store credit for the purchase price of all full priced (i.e. non-sale) items within 2 weeks when accompanied by sales slip. All sale items are final sale. A 10% restocking fee will be assessed on merchandise returned more than two weeks after purchase. No credits or exchanges will be given on sale merchandise or non-sale items returned more than 30 days after purchase.

Do you have more casual or more formal clothing?

Joseph’s has a wide variety of both! We have both Maine’s largest selection of suits and denim, along with dozens of options for formal or casual shirts, trousers, and accessories.
